Short definition
Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are production control systems that act as a link between the company level (ERP) and the automation level (PLC/DCS). They coordinate, monitor and document production processes in real time. MES includes functions such as order management, resource planning, quality management, traceability and performance analysis. In membrane filtration plants, MES ensures complete documentation of all process parameters, batch tracking and compliance with GMP requirements as well as integration into company-wide IT systems.
Functional principle
The MES receives production orders from the ERP system and breaks them down into work steps that are transferred to the control level. It continuously records actual data from the PLC, SCADA and manual inputs. Electronic batch records document all process steps in accordance with ISA-88. Quality data from LIMS is integrated and genealogy functions enable complete traceability. OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) analyses identify optimization potential. Modern MES are based on web technologies with role-based access rights and electronic signatures in accordance with 21 CFR Part 11.
