IECEx standards

Short definition

The IECEx system is an international certification system for explosion protection based on IEC standards (IEC 60079 series). It enables worldwide recognition of conformity assessments through multilateral agreements between national certification bodies. IECEx harmonizes explosion protection requirements across national borders and reduces multiple certifications. In globally operating companies, IECEx-certified automation components for membrane filtration systems enable uniform specifications and simplified procurement for different countries.

Certification system

IECEx comprises equipment certification (IECEx Certificate of Conformity), personnel certification (Competency Scheme) and quality management system certification (Quality Assessment). The technical basis is formed by IEC 60079 standards for types of protection such as Ex d (flameproof enclosure), Ex e (increased safety), Ex ia/ib (intrinsic safety) and Ex px (pressurized enclosure). IECEx member countries recognize each other's certificates, which makes parallel national tests obsolete. ExCB certificates (Ex Component Certificate) cover individual components.

Areas of application

IECEx is particularly relevant for internationally active companies with membrane filtration systems in the oil and gas industry, petrochemicals or pharmaceutical companies worldwide. It simplifies export and global project planning through standardized certification. Plant manufacturers benefit from reduced certification costs for multi-national projects. Acceptance is growing continuously, parallel to regional systems such as ATEX (EU) or NEC (USA).

Typical areas of application:

  • Offshore platforms with seawater desalination
  • Petrochemical plants with process water filtration
  • International pharmaceutical projects with harmonized specifications
  • Mining applications on different continents
  • Globally standardized automation platforms

Summary

IECEx certification simplifies international trade and project planning thanks to globally recognized explosion protection certificates. It reduces costs by avoiding multiple certifications and accelerates time-to-market. For globally active plant manufacturers, it means efficient standardization, cost savings and competitive advantages in international membrane filtration projects.
